Common Dashboard Lights

Dashboard Warning Lights Explained

What do the lights on my dashboard mean?

Are you currently driving around with your dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree? For some drivers, confusion sets in when any one of these lights turn on. These icons can indicate something as serious as an issue with your vehicle's performance or something like low tire pressure. No matter which light is illuminated, it requires your attention. Whether you’re driving around with several of your dashboard warning lights on or none at all, we want to share what these icons mean so you are prepared the next time you see one light up. For more information on what a specific light means, you can always refer to your owner's manual.

Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Light

This is a very important indicator. The light is typically yellow or orange in color and can mean that your vehicle is having performance issues and should be serviced as soon as possible. Taking your vehicle in for service when you notice this icon is illuminated will help prevent further damage to your engine or prevent potential safety hazards internally that could lead to malfunction.

Coolant Temperature Warning Light

This indicator is another significant light to pay attention to. It lets you know when your engine's coolant temperature is too high. This light is typically red and is meant to alert the driver that the engine is overheating. Avoiding this warning light may cause your vehicle more damage. You should turn your engine off and allow it to cool down and seek professional service immediately.

Oil Pressure Warning Light

This icon will notify you when your engine’s oil pressure has become too low. It can be red or yellow and indicates it is time for an oil change. But you shouldn’t wait till this light comes on to properly care for your ride.

Battery/Charging Warning Light

This indicator helps alert you when there is a battery issue and will be red in color. If you see it, have your battery inspected by a professional in case you need a replacement.

Door Ajar Indicator Light

This icon will appear when one or more doors of the vehicle are not properly closed. It is usually red with a symbol of a vehicle and the door that is ajar, causing the light to stay on.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Light

This indicator is activated when one or more of your tires have high or low pressure. This icon is normally yellow and can go away by simply putting air in your tires if the pressure is lower than usual.

Brake System Light

This indicator can have a number of reasons for its presence. For example, your parking brake could be on, the brake fluid could be low, or there could be an ABS problem or an even bigger braking issue. This icon is typically red, and you should have your vehicle inspected if it does not turn off with the release of your brake.

Traction Control Indicator Light

This yellow-colored icon indicates that your traction control system is actively engaged to help improve traction on slippery surfaces or during other challenging driving conditions.

Security Indicator Light

When you see this red icon flashing, it means your vehicle's security system is active. But if this light remains on while driving, then there could be a system problem and you should have it checked by a professional.

Cruise Control Indicator Light

This indicator is activated when you have set your vehicle's cruise control speed. This light may be green or yellow.
